Entrance Enhancement Initiative |
Phase One: Sunday, May 22, 2022 |
In August 2021, after meeting with the Goodlett Cemetery Association, the E. Eugene Johnson Memorial Foundation announced plans for a project to enhance the entryway at the Goodlett Cemetery. The Foundation had formed a committee to work in conjunction with the Goodlett Cemetery Association, which included Jeanne Johnson, Chair, Machelle Davenport, Missy Wilson, Jane Wilson-Ragan, and Claudia Stockstill.
This group set out to finalize plans for the entryway, which included ensuring the existing archway was maintained and adjusting the initial plans to add stone structures to complement each side of the archway. The majority of the work has been recently completed, and additional steps will soon be completed to add new signage to one side of the new entry. The Foundation would like to thank the community for its support with this project including all of those who donated their time and provided their financial support through donations to the Foundation and specifically for this project. Andy Brandon and the Goodlett Cemetery Association worked closely with the committee members with the Foundation in a truly collaborative manner. The Foundation would also like to thank Trent Tabor and Jason Smith for doing most of the heavy lifting as well as Steven Sparkman for his resources. One of the most exciting aspects of this project is the materials used themselves. The stones used to build the new entryway all were donated by the Woodrow Wilson Family and have historical ties to the Wheatland community. It was important to the committee that the new structure have its roots in the local area, and these local resources provided the perfect opportunity to meet that goal.
